The Smiths & Students?

A fantastic article that was written by Jon Savage for the Guardian was published yesterday which deconstructs the meaning of The Queen Is Dead in relation to the on-going student protests.

The article can be found HERE and is a very interesting perspective on the influence of music in relation to politics but it does also go into good detail about the timeless album. Following on from my last post it does relate what Johnny Marr and Morrissey have been talking about in the news as well as highlighting the current issues with the students and addressing the similarities of when the album was released to present day.

For me this is what music is all about and is what makes The Smiths such an iconic band as their meanings are still completely relevant even twenty four years since the release of this amazing album.

A brilliant article and very well written, definitely worth the read.

David Can-jog-on

A week or so back our guitar maverick that is Johnny Marr stirred something of a political-musical discussion saying he forbids our Prime Minister to like The Smiths and adding to that, Morrissey has joined in (cue dramatic music).

Marr stated on Twitter that "David Cameron, stop saying that you like The Smiths, no you don't. I forbid you to like it." A very bold statement which is usually something more on the line of what his ex-partner-in-crime Morrissey would say.

However Morrissey has joined in and is fully supporting his Manchurian brethren in a email he posted on his fansite in which he has also heavily criticised Cameron for allowing a free vote on wanting to appeal against the Hunting Act, truly despicable.

I would post the whole email but in typical Morrissey fashion, he has not held back on a topic that is obviously very close to him. You can find the letter HERE from the fansite true-to-you.net but on the plus side; at least Morrissey is being positive about Johnny Marr! Could this yet be the slow process of building bridges and maybe see something develop? Doubt it but it's a nice thought.

The good old days.

US Finally Get The Smiths

Well obviously our cousins across the pond have known and loved The Smiths for well over two decades but at last the entire Smiths catalogue of albums are available to download through iTunes, hooray!

I found this information out on The Smiths official Facebook page which is a great source of community for our beloved band. The page is also very interactive and currently they are giving away a rare framed artwork for just letting fellow Facebooker's that the page has announced the information on the album catalogue on iTunes, so check it out.

If you are from America and want to use iTunes to buy all the albums you can go to this page to satisfy all your Smiths needs.

I will be posting another article very soon as I have been a little busy the last week and need to catch up on my vocation.
